"The month of Ramadan was the month in which the Qur'an was revealed, guidance to humanity and evidence of guidance and discernment."
Ramadan (Portuguese) or Ramadan (Brazilian Portuguese), also spelled Ramadan (Arabic رمضان) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, in which Muslims practice their ritual fast (saum, صوم), the fourth of the five pillars of the Islam (arkan al-Islam).
The word Ramadan is related to the Arabic word ramida, "to be ardent", seeks as in other religions as Judaism and Christendom, forgiveness and grace before the eternal creator of the heavens. It is a time of renewal of faith, of the most intense practice of charity, and of the profound experience of fraternity and the values of family life. In this period the believer is asked to be closer to the sacred values, more assiduous reading of the Qur'an, frequency of prayer in the mosque, personal correction and self-restraint.
It is the only month mentioned by name in the Qur'an.
